A constraint-propagation approach to quantified constraints

چکیده

Some complex problems could be tackled more satisfactorily by constraint programming tools if it were possible to state arbitrarily quantified constraints. Real-valued quantified constraints have been considered in the field of mathematical programming for more than fifty years, while discrete (boolean) quantified constraints have recently received attention from the SAT community. No direct connection was made between these two research topics, but both of them recently benefited from constraint propagation technology in some sense. It can be hoped for that constraint-propagation will provide a common framework for these two problems. The purpose of this note is to give a brief, non-technical overview of the use of quantified constraints. We briefly present the technique called quantified arc-consistency which we proposed in [BM02] as a generalization of arc-consistency for arbitrarily quantified constraints. 1 Quantified constraints over discrete and continuous

Sensitivity Analysis in Quantified Interval Constraint Satisfaction Problems

Interval is an alternative to probability distribution in quantifying epistemic uncertainty for reliability analysis when there is a lack of data to fit a distribution with good confidence. It only requires the information of lower and upper bounds. The propagation of uncertainty is analyzed by solving intervalvalued constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs). By introducing logic quantifiers, qua...

Generation of Propagation Rules for Intentionally Defined Constraints

A general approach to implement propagation and simplification of constraints consists of applying rules over these constraints. However, a difficulty that arises frequently when writing a constraint solver is to determine the constraint propagation algorithm. In previous work, different methods for automatic generation of propagation rules for constraints defined over finite domains have been ...

Production Constraints Modelling: A Tactical Review Approach

A constraint is a limitation or a restriction that poses a threat to the performance and efficiency of a system. This paper presented a tactical review approach to production constraints modeling. It discussed the theory of constraints (TOC) as a thinking process and continuous improvement strategy to curtail constraints in other to constantly increase the performance and efficiency of a system...

Universal Quantification in a Constraint-Based Planner

Constraints and universal quantification axe both useful in planning, but handling universally quantified constraints presents some noveI challenges. We present a general approach to proving the validity of universally quantified constraints. The approach essentially consists of checking that the constraint is not violated for all members of the universe. We show that this approach can sometime...

Heuristics for dynamically adapting propagation in constraint satisfaction problems

Building adaptive constraint solvers is a major challenge in constraint programming. An important line of research towards this goal is concerned with ways to dynamically adapt the propagation method applied on the constraints of the problem during search. In this paper we present a heuristic approach to this problem based on the monitoring of propagation events like value deletions and domain ...
